CARRAGEENAN
Carrageenan
is called siliquose pelvetia glue extracted from algae/seaweed. This pure
natural food additive has the characteristics of producing strong reaction
gelatin and high viscosity solution. The dried carrageenan powder is very steady
in neutral and basic solution. It begins to dissolve in cold water, and is
totally dissolved at 80oC. The reaction between carrageenan and protein is
the only one of its kind among all aqueous high polymers. The specific
properties of safety and impoisonousness are confirmed by the United Nations
Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization Food Additive
United Expert Committee (UECFA).
Carrageenan
can be used as gelatin, thickening, gelling, suspension, stabilizing agents, and many
more. It has been extensively used in the food industry, and also widely used
such as in chemical industry, medical research, etc.
Some
product examples are: chocolate milk, pudding, ice cream, yogurt, baby food,
jelly, gummy candy, pet food, meat products, toothpaste, detergent, cosmetics,
paint, beer, wine, etc.
The
usage portion of carrageenan powder is between 0.03% and 0.05%.
